Flash fundraising for Dashain

Hi everyone,

As you may know, my husband Mike and I have been supporting the Second Home program to help low income and earthquake affected families in Nepal care for their children and prevent child abandonment into the orphanage system. While we eagerly await the approval of our foundation, we have been sending $500 CAD per month from our own wages to provide hot meals, educational assistance, medical assistance, and incidentals (school uniforms, supplies, etc). With the upcoming festival of Dashain, we are hoping to raise some money to provide each of the 25 children with a new pair of shoes and an outfit, as is customary in Nepali culture. Their parents, sadly, cannot afford to provide this, due to the severe hardship that they are facing.

Dashain is a 15 day long festival in the Hindu religion with a focus on community ties, family, renewal, and feasting.We are hoping to raise $850 to provide a new outfit and shoes to each child, and ensure that they are cared for and well-fed during the festival time. This is a really important action for us, as it allows the families to preserve their dignity as they struggle to survive in very harsh living conditions. Some of our families sleep 8+ people in one tiny room, with one family having to sleep on blankets under the kitchen counter and sink area of a local unfinished building. A new outfit and shoes are certainly not something they would expect their children to be given, and it would thrill them to see their kids thriving in this way.

As always, I will post a tally of funds raised to maintain transparency, using first names. If you wish to remain anonymous, please let me know. I will be using my paypal account and e-transfers to collect and send money to our local family on the ground, who have kindly offered to take all of the children shopping. We are hoping to send the funds on October 4th if possible!
